The freedom of a sketchbook

  • There is a freedom in working intuitively in a sketchbook that nobody has to see – ideas and thoughts can ruminate and develop without scrutiny from the outside world ….. and yet it is these workings that fascinate and excite other artists almost more than finished paintings.
  • What is it about these inner private workings and outer explorations that causes such delight to the creative mind? I love to look at other artists sketchbooks and find them a joy …. One of my new courses is called “learning to love your sketchbook” and it explores that balance between playing and creating. The playing allows for the happy accidents, and the creating develops those found and discovered marks and colour combinations to build the foundations for future paintings.
